Ledyard Safe Teens Coalition

The Ledge Light Health District was awarded a three year grant from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) to implement an underage drinking prevention initiative in Ledyard.  The goals of the initiative (as stated by DMHAS) are to:

  • To prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance abuse, including childhood and underage drinking.

  • Reduce substance abuse-related problems in communities.

  • Build prevention capacity and infrastructure at state and community levels.

  • Implement a process of infusing data across all strategic prevention framework steps for improved decision-making.

The program activities will focus on three distinct phases over the grant period.

Year 1:

  • Establishment of an underage drinking coalition inclusive of all community sectors; youth serving agencies, parents, youth, social services, schools, police and fire departments, parks and recreation, Public Health Nursing, media, faith community, businesses, and others.

  • Baseline data gathered: a regional youth survey tool was administered in April 2007 to youths ages 12-18 to measure the prevalence of substance abuse as well as youth’s perceptions towards alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.  A preliminary report will be available in mid-July.  A complete report will be available for the public in October.  In addition to the survey, parent and youth focus groups will be conducted.

Year 2:

  • The underage drinking coalition will continue to address community needs, resources and readiness of the community while developing a comprehensive, strategic plan to address results of the youth survey.

  • Implementation of strategic plan will begin by focusing on interventions such as: policy change initiatives, environmental strategies and science-based programs.

  • Development of a sustainability plan will begin.

Year 3:

  • Implementation of interventions will continue.

  • Interventions will be monitored, evaluated, sustained, and improved.
