Tobacco Point of Sale Reduction Project

Ledge Light Health District has been awarded a grant by the CT Department of Public Health to prevent tobacco use among teens and young adults by reducing the point of sale advertising for tobacco products and increasing the compliance rate of sale to minors in Groton.

Studies show that children are three times more sensitive to tobacco advertising than adults. 75% of teens visit a convenience store at least once a week-places where tobacco advertising is heavy and frequently at a child's eye level. Unless smoking rates decline, 6,000,000 kids who are alive today and currently under 18 will ultimately die from smoking.

We are encouraging all our local retailers to remove all tobacco ads (or at least decrease the amount of ads in the store and reduce the exposure children have to these ads).
