Farm Stands and Farmers Markets Offer Fresh, Home-Grown Food
(For specific dietary and nutrition concerns, consult a registered dietitian.)
Farmers markets are becoming more popular than ever as consumers search for farm fresh foods. The number of farmers markets across the U.S. increased 18% from 2004 to 2006. Here in CT, 87 farmers markets offer fresh fruit, produce and other specialty items. Farmer's markets benefit small farm operators, consumers who gain access to locally produced foods, and the community. These markets promote wholesome eating, help local farmers sell their goods, and boost the area economy. It's a win-win situation for shoppers and farmers alike.
Some farmers markets in CT are also affiliated with the Women, Infants and Children's Farmer's Market Nutrition Program. The program provides $15 vouchers used toward the purchase of nutritious and locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs at area farmers markets. Farmers that participate in the program are reimbursed for the cost of the voucher. The vouchers are a great way to get local crops into the mouths of families in need.
So, the next time you need fruits and vegetables, take a trip to the nearest farm stand or farmer's market and enjoy the area's freshest foods!
