Student Internships
We are facing a huge shortage of public health professionals in this country. Developing the next generation of our workforce is an important part of the District's mission. To help advance our goal of getting young people interested in careers in public health, the Board of Directors has authorized two programs honoring past Board chairpeople.
The Harry A. Watson Internship
The Harry A. Watson Internship was established in 2005. Harry was a member of the original feasibility committee in 1992, and was appointed to the board of directors when it formed in 1993. He served on the board for 11 years, including terms as chair and vice-chair. In honor of Harry’s dedication to public health and to the regionalization of public health services, the board of directors established a summer internship to teach high school juniors and seniors about public health and possible career opportunities.

The Shirleyann Dunbar-Rose Scholarship
In 2008, the Shirleyann Dunbar-Rose Scholarship was established. Like Harry, Shirleyann was integral in forming the District and was appointed to the board to represent the City of Groton when it formed. She served on the board through 2008, and as chair for the final 7 years of her service. In honor of Shirleyann's dedication to the health of our community, the board of directors established an annual scholarship to reimburse three students graduating from Ella Grasso's food service program for the cost of taking the Qualified Food Operator exam.

To allow us to continue these programs and advance the goal of expanding the public health workforce, the District happily accepts monetary contributions to help off-set the costs of these programs. Please contact Jennifer Muggeo for more details.
