East Lyme Middle School Gastrointestinal Illness
December 26, 2007
Ledge Light Health District has conducted an investigation regarding an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness in the East Lyme Middle School..
Ledge Light Health District received a report of
excessive absenteeism among students at East Lyme Middle School students
on Thursday, December 20, 2007. District personnel, working with
the VNA (Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern CT), East Lyme
School Officials, and the Connecticut Department of Public Health
initiated an investigation.
It was determined that between 15 and 20% of students at the middle
school were absent on Wednesday and Thursday, many of whom suffered from
gastrointestinal symptoms. Based on the likelihood of continued
person-to-person transmission of illness, a recommendation was made to
close the East Lyme Middle School on Friday, December 21, 2007.
East Lyme School Officials notified parents and guardians of the closure
on Thursday evening and provided them with information regarding the
outbreak, suspected disease agent, and preventative measures.
Please contact Steve Mansfield, Assistant Director, Environmental Health Services, if you have any questions or concerns regarding this outbreak.
