Lice

Flu Info | Healthy Habits | Immunization | MRSA  | Pandemic Flu | Public Health Reporting |              Sexually Transmitted Disease  | Tuberculosis

Head lice or louse are parasites that live in people's hair and feed on their blood. They are passed onto other people's hair through close contact, sharing hats or combs and brushes. Anyone can get lice! Just because a person has lice, does not mean they are not clean.

Lice are common in schools and day cares. It is no longer recommended to keep a child out of school until treated or to notify the parents of classmates. Head lice do not transmit disease and there is no evidence that keeping a child out of school until treated prevents lice in the classroom. Check out the Lice treatment guide below for more information.
