History

The Ledge Light Health District was formed in 1993, the result of efforts of a group of citizens dedicated to improving public health services for the City and Town of Groton. In 2001, the Town of Ledyard joined the District, followed by the Town of Waterford in 2002, the City of New London in 2005, and the Town of East Lyme in 2006. Today, we serve over 119,000 citizens in these 6 municipalities. The District’s main office is in Groton, with satellite offices in New London and East Lyme.

The Ledge Light Health District is a regional approach to full time professional public health services. The District exists in lieu of local health departments in our member municipalities, with the mandate of providing comprehensive and efficient public health services to our entire service population. The District is organized under Connecticut General Statute 19a-240 and 241 as a government entity and is governed by a Board of Directors.

Our mission is to protect the public health and to improve the quality of life of our service population through health education and disease prevention. The District is responsible for the enforcement of the Public Health Code and applicable State of Connecticut Statutes in our member municipalities. We work to prevent epidemics and undertake activities or programs aimed at creating a safe, healthy environment. We promote wellness and healthy lifestyles through health education and health promotion programs.

As new public health issues arise, the Ledge Light Health District continues to strive to fulfill our responsibilities and create changes which build a healthier future for all our residents.
