New London County Health Study

Building upon their collaborative efforts to break down barriers to healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured in New London County, the 17 partners in CHAMP (Community Health Access Management Program) commissioned a health status assessment of New London County residents in the hope of leaving a foundation for improving healthcare delivery and prevention for all residents of the county.

The study, which was conducted in fall of 2006 by The Center for Health Policy, Planning and Research at The University of New England in Portland, Maine, includes a telephone survey of 1,300 households in the County on health and health related topics and analyses of hospital emergency department and inpatient data, birth and mortality data, and cancer data.

The objectives of the study are to: 1) develop a comprehensive baseline profile of health status and utilization indicators on residents of the County; 2) assess the adequacy of existing services in meeting the community’s priority health needs while identifying duplications and gaps in services; and, 3) provide recommendations on how access and quality of care can be improved through partnerships of providers and the community and through integration of the public health system with health care providers.

The study marks the first time the health of county residents has been assessed on a regional basis, enabling all stakeholders in healthcare delivery and prevention to compare the region with state and national statistics and identify areas where improvement is needed.

Findings from the study were released at the Facts, Figures and Focus Symposium on April 5th and will be available on this website. For preliminary information, please read the Study Report, attached in the Helpful Resources Section below.  The presentations made by study consultant, Ron Deprez of the Center for Health Policy, Planning and Research; Sue Peters, CHAMP Project Director; and conference speakers Jerry Whalen of Eastern Maine Health Care, and Natalie Morse of Maine General Health are also available to view or download.
